OpenID enabled for Comments

As I was poking around, I realized that more sites mainstream sites have implemented OpenID than when I last looked, particularly AOL and LiveJournal.

So I figured out how to get it working for commenting here. I used the WordPress OpenID Plugin+ and the newest version worked almost smoothly. I had to add one table to the database and set the primary keys manually. I’m using wordpress 2.3 and the latest trunk version of the plugin available as of this posting.

If you want to comment by logging into your OpenID, you will need your personal url. Some examples:

http://username.livejournal.com/

http://openid.aol.com/username

Put this into the “Website” field and leave the others blank (or fill them, but the data will be discarded). If you have used the appropriate URL, it should present you a page requesting your permission to use your identity to post (an incorrect URL will post normally). Continue through the permission granting process, and your post will be completed using your identity.

Hopefully in the future, more websites will support this. I particularly look forward to google and facebook.

On a related tangent, I was able to get an OpenID server running on this domain so that I can log into other sites that support OpenID.  I used phpMyID which provides a quick, simple, 2 file install for a single user. Highly recommended.
