I should go to bed

I’ve not been doing well with my technology in the last hour. First, I stupidly knock my water bottle over so that it drains maybe a quarter of a liter of water into the open laptop before I can stop it. Of course I pull the power cord and battery instantly, and I’m sure the machine itself will be fine, but I’m slightly worried about the water that I saw wicking up into the screen. I suppose I’ll see how it is in the morning.

Update: The laptop is fine, after being left to dry for a while. I think this machine is probably immortal.

Then my right headphone channel stops working. These are a half-decent set – Sennheiser 570s, so I’d like to avoid having to junk them. Also, new headphones are NOT in the budget right now. I check the cord, check the plugs, wiggle the cord, nothing will convince it to start working again. I tap it, and notice that there’s a small rattle on the inside.

Fixing them turned out to be surprisingly easy:

  • Pry off the decorative molding around the bottom, on the back of the phone away from the ear.
  • Pry up the grill.
  • Re-plug the little two-pin connector that is now dangling free.
  • Snap each of the plastic pieces back on. Getting the lower molding to snap back was the hardest part of the whole operation.

Wanting to document this operation for posterity, I pull out the camera. Hmm… that’s odd, aperture shouldn’t read 00. Re-seat the lens, and it works properly, but it worries me for the future… I definitely don’t have the budget for a new lens. Didn’t bother pulling the photo into the computer, so it’s not in this post. Sorry.

Now to put the camera away before I spill water on it, or accidentally toss it out the window.
