Portal

Go buy Portal now. Right now. Stop reading and go do it.

I was more or less forced to purchase Portal by my friend Volty. This was a good thing. Portal is the best thing since sliced bread, and it may very well be above even this paragon of metrics. If you like puzzle solving games, this is the game for you. If you can’t understand why it’s so cool from watching the trailer, please double-check to make sure you’re human.

This trailer also be viewed directly from valve’s site in slightly better quality.

As an aside: I learned from this post that Adblock Plus (with the “Show Tabs on Flash and Java” option enabled) is not compatible with the wordpress WYSIWYG editor when you include Flash or Java in your posting. Fortunately I don’t use those tabs, so I just turned them off. It seems that the editor is generating HTML on the fly, then using the DOM to display the generated HTML in the “code” view. Since ABP modifies the HTML as it is rendered, the “block this” tab shows up in the code for the final post.

I had the same experience with AdBlock modifying my post’s HTML on LJ. And actually I didn’t exactly find a version for LJ – I literally copied the player.swf file from your WP plugins directory and copied the code to embed the object from the source of your blog. Portal seems to be the word on the street these days…

If I use my LJ website to post, and it asks me to verify my identity, why is it still showing up as anonymous?

Well it does seem clear that you ARE actually logged in via your LJ account… Perhaps there’s a profile field like name or nickname that’s set to private (or only visible to people logged into LJ)? I tried it with mine, and it worked alright.

The other thing that was very annoying was that the Adblock tabs are not disabled when I add my site to the exceptions list, but only when I add the remote content to the list.

That’s absolutely insane. I think I may have to give in to your pressure now…
